Do any of these

sound familiar?

We're watching competitors ship what we still call a hypothesis.
Our team is building features without product-market fit.
Adoption stalled after launch and we don't know why.
Stakeholders disagree on MVP scope and what to ship first.
AI is on the roadmap but no one knows where it adds real value.

4 Ways to De-Risk Your Next Product Investment

Each service answers a different question. Together they cover the full path from idea to development-ready scope.

Most products don't fail because of bad code. They fail because of untested assumptions. Ideation gives your team the evidence to commit a budget with confidence.

Frequently asked questions

What is product discovery and when do I need it?

Product discovery is a structured research and validation process that runs before software development begins. It interviews users, validates assumptions about their problems, prototypes solutions, and tests them before any production code is written. Enterprise teams need product discovery when committing budget to a new product, redesigning an existing one, or adding a major capability. SH offers Product Discovery as a 4 to 8 week engagement that ends with a tested prototype, a prioritized feature list, and a development cost estimate.

How is product discovery different from a design sprint?

A design sprint is a 5-day workshop format focused on rapidly prototyping and testing one specific solution. Product discovery is a longer, broader engagement that covers user research, problem definition, ideation, prototyping, and testing across multiple solution paths. A design sprint answers "does this one idea work?". Product discovery answers "what should we build, for whom, and why?". For enterprise products with multiple stakeholders and significant development budgets, discovery is the right depth. For single-feature validation, a design sprint can be enough.

What deliverables should I expect from product discovery?

A complete Product Discovery engagement at SH delivers: a validated low-fidelity prototype tested with real users, a prioritized list of MVP features aligned with user needs and business goals, a development cost estimate, user persona documentation, customer journey maps, AI integration recommendations where relevant, and full documentation your engineering team can act on. Everything is structured so development can start without waiting for additional clarification.

How long does a product discovery phase take?

A typical product discovery phase at SH runs 4 to 8 weeks. Timeline depends on the complexity of your product, the number of user personas being researched, and the scope of the prototype being tested. Condensed versions are available for teams with tighter deadlines. R&D Exploration runs 2 to 4 weeks. Scope Building runs 2 to 5 weeks. User Testing runs 2 to 4 weeks.

When should an enterprise run product discovery vs. build directly?

Enterprises should run product discovery when the cost of building the wrong thing exceeds the cost of validating it first. That threshold is usually crossed when the development budget enters six figures, when multiple stakeholders disagree on direction, when the product targets a new user segment, or when AI is part of the roadmap but the team isn't sure where it adds value. Teams that go straight to development without discovery typically spend 2 to 3 times more on post-launch rework than they would have spent on discovery upfront.

How do you de-risk a software development project?

Software development risk comes from two sources: building the wrong features, and building them on untested technical assumptions. SH addresses both through Ideation services. Product Discovery validates user needs and business problems before features are scoped. R&D Exploration tests technical feasibility through proof-of-concept prototypes before architecture is committed. Scope Building tests prioritized features with real users before MVP development starts. User Testing catches UX issues at the prototype stage where fixes cost hours, not quarters. The combination removes the most expensive sources of late-stage rework.

AI product discovery — what is it and how does it differ from traditional discovery?

AI product discovery is product discovery applied to products that include AI as a core capability. It adds three layers traditional discovery doesn't cover: data quality assessment (whether your data can support the AI use case), model selection (which approach actually fits the problem), and AI value validation (whether AI meaningfully improves the solution or just adds complexity). At SH, AI product discovery is run as part of Product Discovery for AI-enabled products, with proof-of-concept testing handled in R&D Exploration when technical feasibility is uncertain.
