The three questions every client asks
Before signing with any software partner, clients want to know three things: who exactly will work on my product, what happens when my priorities change mid-project, and who owns what we build. This post answers all three with the actual terms we work under at Startup House.
Who works on your project
You approve every engineer before they start. Whether you choose team augmentation or a dedicated team, we propose specific engineers from our bench, you run technical interviews with them, and nobody joins your project without your sign-off.
Every engineer is vetted before reaching your shortlist. The process covers a technical assessment, code review, and a structured interview, plus verification of references and past project experience relevant to your stack.
Seniority is a policy, not a promise. In team augmentation, we place mid-level and senior engineers only. We do not place junior talent in augmentation roles, because your team needs people who contribute from day one. In our AI-Native Pod model, teams are senior-heavy by design: a small senior team plus a delivery lead instead of a larger mixed-seniority group.
Speed: in most cases we present shortlisted profiles within one week and complete onboarding within 2 to 4 weeks of your selection. Compare that with the 35 to 40 days it takes on average to hire a software engineer in 2026, before onboarding even starts.
Who manages whom depends on the model:
- Team Augmentation: engineers join your sprint cycles, use your tools, and report to your leads. You manage the work; we handle sourcing, vetting, and replacement.
- Dedicated Team: a complete cross-functional unit (PM, designers, engineers, QA, DevOps) managed by our delivery lead. You set direction and priorities; we run sprint planning, code reviews, and retros, and send you regular delivery reports.
- AI-Native Pod: a managed senior team running on an AI toolchain (Cursor, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) with weekly written reports, monthly delivery reviews, and quarterly strategic check-ins.
- Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT): we build the team, operate it, and then transfer it to you, people, processes, and tooling included. Most BOT engagements run 12 to 24 months, with the build phase taking 4 to 8 weeks.
What happens when scope changes
Scope changes are not an exception in product development. They are the norm, so the engagement terms are built around them.
Scaling up and down is part of the contract. You can add engineers for a critical sprint and reduce when scope stabilizes, on agreed notice. There are no long-term minimums on individual engineers, and no commitments beyond the active sprint cycle in dedicated teams. Augmentation engagements start from one month; most clients run them for 3 to 12 months, adjusting the team as the project evolves.
Continuity is protected during changes. In dedicated teams, we keep a core delivery lead and senior engineers in place across team changes, so knowledge does not walk out the door when composition shifts.
Pivoting mid-build is planned for. In MVP development, we treat direction changes as a normal part of product discovery, not a failure. AI-assisted workflows mean a pivot costs a fraction of what it used to, so we keep options open until user data tells us to close them.
If an engineer is not the right fit, we replace them immediately. The replacement process starts without delay, so your timeline stays protected.
Who owns the code
The short answer: you do. All of it.
- All code, documentation, designs, and product artifacts you commission belong to you. After an MVP engagement you receive full source code, intellectual property, design files, documentation, and deployment access.
- No vendor lock-in and no licensing fees. You can continue with us, hand over to your internal team, or move to another partner. Our handover documentation is written to stand on its own.
- NDAs are standard, and we operate in line with ISO 27001, with GDPR-compliant data handling. For regulated industries, we map to your HIPAA, SOC 2, and DORA requirements, with infrastructure setup and data handling documented for your auditors on request.
- In the BOT model, ownership goes one step further: at transfer, the entire team, processes, tooling, and institutional knowledge become part of your company, with post-transfer support included.
How AI fits into delivery, with governance
Our teams use AI tooling for code generation, test writing, and documentation, which is a large part of why smaller teams ship more per sprint. The governance rules are explicit:
- No AI-generated code ships without human review. AI-generated code is flagged in pull requests and reviewed by senior engineers before merge.
- Security scanning runs on every push: SAST, dependency scanning, and secret detection.
- AI usage is documented in pull requests, so you have a full audit trail.
We treat AI like a fast junior engineer: useful, never trusted unilaterally. Architecture, security, and edge case decisions stay with humans.
What you can expect week to week
Transparency is procedural, not aspirational. Depending on the model, you get demos and regular updates, weekly written reports, monthly delivery reviews, and quarterly strategic check-ins. Development starts within weeks of the initial workshop, and you see progress against the roadmap continuously, not at milestone reveals.

Application Outsourcing
Outsourcing applications is a governance problem as much as a sourcing one. This guide explains the strategic value of application outsourcing, compares the core engagement models, and covers stack selection and industry-specific requirements. It follows the outsourcing lifecycle from discovery through scaling, then examines the economics honestly, including where apparent savings turn into rework. Sections on engineering culture, platform engineering and the effect of AI on outsourcing close the picture.

Why Knowledge Base Content Becomes Outdated
Your knowledge base was a source of truth once. Now it's a liability. Products have changed, teams have restructured, and the documentation your employees and customers rely on is silently giving wrong answers.

How a Cybersecurity Platform Serving Fortune 500 Clients Cut Onboarding by 95% with an AI Agent Built by Startup House
A cyber risk platform trusted by Fortune 500 companies had a familiar problem: customers respected it but opened it once a quarter, and onboarding took 45 minutes of guided setup. Startup House built Aria, an AI agent embedded inside the product, with a four-layer interface that serves board members, CFOs, and CISOs in one panel. Onboarding dropped by 95% to under 2 minutes, data exploration became fully self-serve, and the platform turned into a daily decision-support tool. This case study explains the interface, the tenant-isolation architecture, and why none of it required touching the platform's core codebase.

Edtech Development at Startup House: What We've Built and What It Changed
EdTech platforms fail for UX reasons more often than technical ones: learners drop off, content doesn't scale, and ROI stays invisible. This article shows how Startup House avoids that with phased delivery and real user testing, using two projects as proof. Graspify went from a bold idea to a microlearning platform that trained hundreds of employees during a corporate event, and LITTLEWINE got an investor-ready scope from 10 user interviews in 2 weeks. It also covers AI learning tools that answer only from approved content and can go live in as little as 2 weeks.
