But what if you want to take it further — and give your users a mobile-first digital key experience, complete with real-time logs, dynamic access control, and smart notifications?
That’s exactly what we set out to do — and this article shows how we did it (and what we learned along the way).
🔑 Setting the Stage: What’s an Access Control System, Anyway?
Let’s face it: in today’s world, you can’t just leave the door unlocked and hope for the best. That’s where an access control system comes in—a security solution designed to decide who gets in, who stays out, and when. Whether you’re managing a bustling office building, a stadium, or a distributed network of locations, physical access control is your first line of defense.
Access control systems come in all shapes and sizes. Some are as simple as a code lock on a door; others are sophisticated, scalable access control systems that tie into building automation and alarm system control. The best systems are designed for high reliability, ensuring that only authorized people can access sensitive areas, while keeping everything running smoothly behind the scenes.
By implementing a robust access control system, organizations can maintain high reliability and security, streamline operations, and even add a touch of stylistic flair to their entrances. From managing who can enter a meeting room to automating entire buildings, these systems are the backbone of modern security—designed to keep your people, property, and peace of mind intact.

🔧 The Physical Access Control Integration Goals
We didn't want to replace ROGER — we wanted to enhance it with features that modern users expect:
- Mobile access via smartphone app
- Real-time access logs per user/unit/door
- Support for PIN code, NFC, Bluetooth
- Admin panel with time- and role-based permissions
- Remote key issuing & revocation
- Alerts & anomaly detection
In short: keep the solid ROGER backend, but plug in a smarter, leaner, user-facing access layer.
🔌 Step-by-Step: How the Integration Works
1. We Hooked into the ROGER Database Layer
Using ROGER’s open database structure and integration guides, we created sync jobs that map:
- ROGER user → platform user
- ROGER access group → platform role
- Access events → structured JSON logs
2. We Built a Middleware API
To decouple ROGER from our app, we built a lightweight service layer that:
- Polls ROGER logs every 10–30 seconds
- Pushes updates into our cloud dashboard
- Sends mobile notifications on access events
- Exposes endpoints for assigning or revoking PINs and credentials
- Handles real-time request commands, such as door opening requests, to support integrated access control and monitoring.
3. We Unified Permissions with Our Role System
Rather than using ROGER’s fixed hierarchy, we mapped it to our own permission engine:
- Role: Tenant, Cleaner, Manager, Contractor
- Scope: Unit A, Main Gate, Back Entrance
4. We Synced Access Logs with Our Analytics Engine
Every access event is:
- Stored with user ID + device + timestamp + entry point
- Available via admin dashboard
- Exportable for audit or compliance
- Used for tracking user activity and access events to enhance monitoring and ensure compliance.
📱 The Mobile Experience
ROGER hardware stays in the background. To the user, everything happens in our app:
- Unlock doors via PIN
- Get access for a specific date/time/location
- Receive real-time alerts (e.g. failed access attempts)
- View personal history of entries
This UX layer is what makes digital access feel truly modern.
🧠 What We Learned (and Would Do Again)
| Challenge | Solution |
| Lack of direct API in ROGER | Use DB sync + middleware polling |
| PIN updates delay in sync | Create a queue and prioritize real-time jobs |
| Role mapping complexity | Abstract platform roles from ROGER groups |
| Limited logs on older devices | Normalize logs in platform format with fallback |
🔐 Bonus: ROGER Access Control Systems + Logs + Mobile = Enterprise-Ready
Thanks to this integration, we now offer:
- ✅ Mobile-first experience for users
- ✅ Advanced audit logs for admin teams
- ✅ Real-time alerts + analytics
- ✅ Cloud dashboard for access control
- ✅ No need to replace ROGER hardware
It's ideal for:
- Smart offices
- Multi-tenant buildings
- Self-storage facilities
- Logistics & industrial sites
✅ Conclusion
If you're already using ROGER, you don't have to start from scratch. You can integrate your existing infrastructure into a modern, scalable, mobile-first digital key platform.
All it takes is the right API layer, good logging hygiene — and a clear UX vision.
